The Gaming Giant Hires Apex Legends Developer to Revitalize Challenged Hero Shooter Ambitious Title

The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Management Shift Comes After Mixed Response

Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's disappointing early showing last fall.

On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed team members about this decision through an internal memo, which emphasized that playtesting had shown the requirement for a distinct direction.

Ismailer stated that the team is now overhauling Project Ethos with a revised vision, aiming to better meet gamer demands.

Trend of Strategic Acquisitions

This announcement mirrors a similar move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to work on the beloved franchise development group.

Below is the entire content from Ismailer's announcement:

Hello Everyone—

I understand you all just wrapped up your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and creative creators we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to continue.”

With your dedication and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It confirmed the promise of a action-packed game but told us we still had work to do. It highlighted the necessity for a clearer brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the input to mind and revamped the title with a refreshed direction - one that’s poised to deliver on its potential to our audience.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS increases every day. To further the remarkable progress you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of 31st Union. After some time of discussions, he starts with us on the specified date.

Ben’s management and background in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having spent the past decade and a half creating and overseeing some of the most popular series in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.

Let’s together in welcoming Ben next week. We are all excited to persist seeing the progress of the game in the months to follow.

The President

Background of the Incoming Leader

Brinkman currently holds the position of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He previously worked at major gaming companies in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Details and Concept

Project Ethos was unveiled in October 2024 together with a early access event. Initially, the developers described the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting advancement on the style."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch reads. "Challenge the opponents with new abilities, challenges, and tests that evolve every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, gamble everything, and trust your team can earn top ranking? The option is up to you."

The game has not yet received an official launch window or consoles, but players can look forward to additional details as production progresses.
