Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and given more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a document approving the custody, the judge said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a assembly of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the potential of the former president's transfer to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

The legal document highlights that the US embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, leading him to implement a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being held in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will experience a detention review on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that he be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he required regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the time, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
