The esteemed football figure has stated that he is not pursuing a comeback in football management, pointing out that it would be challenging to match the unique sense of purpose he encountered as England’s manager.

Southgate indicated his aim to dedicate his efforts toward supporting the next generation and addressing what he described as a pervasive negative narrative presently found in the country.

Exploring New Avenues Away from Football

During a broadcast discussion, Southgate was prompted regarding speculation linking him with vacant management roles in the top flight and abroad.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he answered. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

Dedication to Role Models

Leading up to the launch of his upcoming book, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, he shared that he is “very passionate” about setting examples for teenagers, drawing on lessons from his period as head coach of the national side between 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

Southgate feels that his time leading the national team, during which the team transformed from being widely disliked to broadly loved, holds general lessons.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he noted. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Raising Children and Guiding Young People

Speaking from his experience as a father, the coach commented: “Every parent aims to provide a solid foundation, yet there comes a time when children stop heeding parental advice. I’ve faced this at home, just like others, and I believe this area is critically important.”

He added: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”

Unity Over Conflict

Southgate insisted that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the societal attention often highlights disagreement.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he said. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

His upcoming publication, the book Dear England, is expected to provide deeper reflections on guidance and country pride based on his distinguished professional journey.
