Educator Slain and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Armed Clash at Educational Institution in Nigeria

Violent incident at learning center
Schools in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for weapon-wielding factions

Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an attack on a female high school in Nigeria's northwestern region, according to police.

The gang of attackers breached the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Kebbi State's Maga area at roughly 4 in the morning local time on Monday, police confirmed.

The attackers "confronted officers on duty in a shootout" before scaling the perimeter fence and abducting the learners from their living quarters, an official report indicated.

A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now receiving treatment.

Observers recounted a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to create fear.

Community members disclosed to media that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into adjacent wilderness.

The police said they had deployed "supplementary tactical squads, together with army members and vigilante groups" to the area.

A organized locating and saving mission is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and suspected escape routes.

In recent years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have increasingly been targeted for armed groups, who frequently execute kidnappings to request monetary settlements or leverage deals with the government.

The attack in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge afflicting the area, leaving families in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they wait and hope for their children's secure homecoming.

Security crisis in Nigeria's northern territories has worsened considerably in the past few months, with educational institutions bearing the brunt of the violence.
