A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
